Research and Planning: Evaluation of Magazine Cover

Friday, 27 September 2013 04:03 Posted by l1v.design

To begin with, my target audience wanted bright colours as well as certain articles such as Horoscopes, Fashion and Gossip. I felt as though this suited what the target audience asked for as it presents a fashionable model on the cover and contains most of the articles they requested for.

The font sizes are correct as the writing is easy to read and the border around each text makes the Headings and the Masthead bold enough so it does not blend into the background. The writing on the Contents Page is also visible to the reader as there are boxes to stop the text from going unseen due to the background.

In my honest opinion, I feel as though the 'Three Colour' rule, of which is seen in most magazines, was not used in this one. As I look at both the Cover and Contents page, I begin to notice that I have used at least 5 colours. However, the 5 colours are used on both pages, therefore they are still connected in some cases. Also, you are able to tell that the two pages are the same as I have used the same 'Brick Wall' background as well as having the Magazine Cover presented on the Contents Page. Although if this magazine were to publish more, I would need to put the Magazine Cover onto each Contents Page. In order to solve this problem, I would need to make sure I use the Three Colour Rule, otherwise the Magazine would look unprofessional.

Adding to this, The images I have used suit well to the audience. The target audience requested for a Magazine that had some 'fashion articles' inside. As well as the model being a College Student, the medium close-up shot appears to have a sense of fashion as the props she is wearing (which is the Hat, Backpack and Cardigan) shows she is in the latest Autumn fashion trend.
As for the Background, I believed this suited well to the magazine genre. The 'Brick Wall' background shots indicates she is either walking to College or is going to an educational place. The angled-shot of the Brick Wall that is on the Contents Page portrays the fact that the pages are related to each other. Even though the lighting on the two pages are slightly different, they do look similar in some way.

Moreover, the Articles on the magazine overall I believe are very eye-catching. In my opinion, the articles of which are shown on the Magazine Cover can catch the reader's interest as each header shows a style my readers wanted to read about. For example, the first heading shown is about 'Fashionable Bags' which was one of the main subjects my target audience wished to look at. As well as this, my audience wanted to read about Gossip; seeing as this was a College Magazine, I combined Gossip and College together to create a captivating Headline. This headline was my best idea as it can easily engage the reader to buy the magazine.
In addition, the Contents Page shows all of the pages. The articles provided on the page are suitable for the readers. As they said in the Interview, they wished to see such pages like Horoscopes, Fashion, Gossip and more. I added a few more subjects serving as Competitions and Interviews. These pages were made in order to add more to the magazine as well as make the magazine much more intriguing for the reader.

In conclusion, I enjoyed creating this style of a magazine. In my opinion, I believed it met the targets of the audience and the presentation looks similar as a true magazine Cover  & Contents page would look. If I was able to improve this magazine, I would look more into the Three Colour Rule and perhaps edit some colours of the Contents Page to look similar to the Magazine Cover. As for the model, I would not change anything as the image is shot as a Medium close up and the model looks fashionable for the readers to look up to. In my belief, I think this is an interesting and eye-catching magazine.

Research and Planning: Complete Magazine (20/9/13)

Friday, 20 September 2013 04:09 Posted by l1v.design

I have added some touch-ups to the magazine cover. I noticed that the drop shadow on two of the headers were not placed right, this left the header to be unnoticeable. In order to change this, I added less opacity to the shadow to make it more bold and changed the angle of the shadow.

As for the contents page mock-up, it is also completed. I created the Contents page so it would suit the same design and style as the Cover. In order to make it similar, I used the same colours  for the text and a similar brick wall background. I added a text box as well as the Magazine Cover image in order to show it is a new issue.

Research and Planning: Magazine Cover So Far (17/9/13)

I have completed the Magazine Cover, all I need to complete is the Contents Page.

Research and Planning: Headers

Monday, 16 September 2013 01:56 Posted by l1v.design
In this task, we were given 3 magazine titles and had to design the layout for the title on each one. the titles were 'Popworld', 'Death Metal', and 'Popcorn'.

The first one I created was 'Popworld'. 'Popworld' to me sounded as if it was a Pop music magazine, therefore I used light and bright pink/purple colours in order to show it was to do with the Pop genre. The font for this header was 'Hobo STD'. The reason for this is the font  was a bubbly and round shape which gave out the vibe of an  informal and crazy style. I added a border around this font by double-clicking the layer and ticking the box Stroke, this allowed the font to be visible on almost any background. I also added a circle shape by going on the toolbar and clicking the Ellipse Tool, I then used the tools at the top to create the border and background colour of the circle.

Moreover, to make the 'Death Metal' header, I had to think of what the words 'Death' and 'Metal' would mean in a magazine. I believed it was a genre of Music, therefore the background was given an Electric Guitar and flames to indicate this was about extreme music. The font I used for this header was 'Trajan Pro'. I believed it gave a Medieval look, therefore I thought it would look suitable for the heading. I added a border and a drop shadow in order to visibly see the title due to the flames in the background; this was done by double-clicking the text layer and ticking the boxes Stroke and Drop Shadow.

Lastly, like the other two headers, I had to think about what the word 'Popcorn' meant for a magazine title. I thought that the magazine would have been something to do with Movies, therefore I used the font 'Rosewood STD' as most classical movie theatres & circus' used this font to show movie titles or events. I made the font colour a light yellow and added a dark red border so the heading looked classical and interesting. Because the masthead was to do with 'Popcorn', I added some popcorn images in the background and placed them so it looked as though the popcorn was spilling out of the basket. I believe this gave a good effect to the masthead.

Research and Planning: Draft of Magazine Cover

In order for me to think about what the magazine Heading, cover and overall presentation was going to be, I had to think of a theme. My target was to aim at college students, therefore my magazine should contain such things as fashion, music, studying tips and college gossip.

The masthead, 'Youth' was thought of by myself. I believed this would have made a good title as it indicated that this magazine would be for young people in College.
I also thought that the model in the image was good as she is presenting fashion in Winter as well as showing she is going to college or walking far to an educational place.

Research and Planning: Modeling photos & Props and Costumes

The target audience I was aiming for was mainly college students, so I made my model wear a backpack to indicate she was going to an educational place. Also, due to the fact the audience was mainly into fashion, I made the model wear a fashionable beanie and cardigan to show that it is getting to winter and this is the latest fashion to wear. My model also has dip-dyed hair, this is good as it presents that she is in the latest fashion trend.
The props and clothing that were used were a beanie and a backpack. the backpack clearly shows she is going out to college or is going somewhere where she needs a lot of books. The beanie was worn in order to show it is winter and she is walking to college

When it comes to the background, I wanted it to look as though it was a sunny day and she was walking to college. Due to the weather, I was unable to gain that effect. Although, I am going to used a DTP in order to create the image that she is somewhere outside. To do this, I will change the background and the lighting.

These are the Modeling photos I took using my camera:

Research and Planning: Questions to the Audience

Friday, 13 September 2013 04:14 Posted by l1v.design

In order to find out more about what my target audience is interested in, I will need to interview them so I have the right magazine that is suitable for the audience.

1) What do you like to read in a magazine?

2) What are the sorts of things you do in your sparetime?

3) What colour theme would you like to see in a magazine? Vibrant and Bright or Pale and Pastel?

4) How much would you pay for a magazine?

5) What do you believe can make an interesting magazine?

These were the interviews and answers from the 5 questions:

During this project, I had to create a magazine of a Film Review which contained an article, an image, a heading and a background.
To begin with, I started with the Article. I looked up a film review for Johnny Depp's 'The Lone Ranger' on safari and copied & pasted it into Microsoft Word. I opened up Adobe InDesign and created a new document, then I made 3 column borders by going to Layout > Margins andColumns and typed in '3' for the number of Columns. Next, I went onto File > Place and clicked on the saved Word document with the film review. InDesign came up with the mouse containing all of the text, I created a box for each column using the guidelines InDesign gave me earlier. With this, I was able to create three columns of text; however, the text was too long so I had to erase some paragraphs in order to fit it all in.
The next thing I had to do was import an image for the magazine. Like the text, I went on Safari and looked for an image relating to 'The Lone Ranger'. Once I found one, I dragged it to the Desktop, allowing the image to be saved on the Mac. Like earlier, I went back to InDesign and clicked on to File > Place and clicked on the .jpg image. This allowed InDesign to place the image onto my magazine design. I moved the image to the way I wanted it and changed the size. In order to change the size, I had to click on the Selection Tool and moved the box to the size I wished it to be; I then went onto Object > Fitting > Fit Content To Frame which shrunk the image to the guidelines of the box.

Adding to this, I had to create a Text Box for the Heading. To do so, I clicked on the Type Tool in the toolbar and dragged the mouse to create a box. I moved the box so it was at the top and typed in 'The Lone Ranger Review'. I edited the text so it was the right size and font by highlighting the text and going to the top of the program.

Lastly, I had to create a background. In order for me to do this, I went to the toolbar and clicked on the Rectangle Tool. Next, I held the mouse in the top corner of the border and went to the bottom corner of the page in order to fill the entire magazine background.

Research and Planning: A 'Medium Close-up'

These are examples of Medium close-up shots. I will need to use medium close up's when it comes to making my magazine.

Research and Planning: Analysing a magazine

How do you know this is a college magazine?

To begin with, The magazine title shows this is a college magazine as it is called 'College'. This clearly indicates that this is a college-based magazine. Also, the cover lines surrounding the image are mainly to do with subjects that interest young-adults.
Because this is an American magazine, the target audience for this will be young-adults as they will be in college at this time.
In my opinion, I would assume the target audience will be people from ages 18 -21. The reason for this is the magazine uses quite informal language compared to big magazines. Also, the magazine writes on the cover titles such things as 'Texts from last night' which would only be shocking for people in this age group. The magazine also uses humour and contains a famous music artist as the largest cover title and the image. This shows that people from ages 18 -21 will know exactly who the artist is and will understand some of the humour in the entire cover.

Research and Planning: Poster Activity

Monday, 9 September 2013 01:46 Posted by l1v.design

In this project, I had to find a film poster and replace the face with either mine or another celebrity. I used the movie 'Iron Man's poster and replaced Robert Downey Jr's face with comedian, Lee Evans.
First off, I had to find an Iron Man film poster off the internet and place the image file into Photoshop. Then, I had to search the internet again to find a picture of Lee Evans that had the same face angle as the poster's.
After I found a picture that was suitable, I had to take the background off the Lee Evans' image layer by using the 'Quick Selection Tool' so I was able to just get the face.
I made the image sharper by using the 'Unsharp Mask' tool in order to suit the Iron Man layer.
In order to make it as though Lee Evans is Iron Man, I had to darken the layer and add more contrast. I did this by clicking on the Lee Evans' layer and going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/contrast. This allowed me to make the poster realistic.

The face had to look as realistic and as good quality as possible. In order to do so,  I had to blend Lee Evans' hair into Robert Downey Jr's hair. Both Robert Downey Jr and Lee Evans have black/dark hair, therefore I used the Eraser Tool and the Paint Tool to blend Lee Evans' hair with Robert Downey Jr's. This was a simple task to do as I did not have to remove Lee Evans' hair in order to look like Robert Downey Jr's.

Research and Planning: Photoshop Challenge

Friday, 6 September 2013 03:45 Posted by l1v.design

In order for me to create this, I first needed to make a new file then change the page to A4 by clicking on Preset > International Paper and make the size A4.
Afterwards, I had to add the text 'AS Media Studies' in Century Gothic and make the size font 24. To do this, I clicked on the Text icon in the toolbar and then clicked on the page. I then went to the top of the page where it says the font style and size. I changed the font style to Century Gothic and changed the size to 24 as requested. I also had to place the text in the middle of the page and change the colour to Red. To do this, I highlighted the text and went over to the colour swatch on the right side of the program in order to colour the text. I then dragged the text to the middle
In order to create a drop shadow on the text, I had to double-click the text layer until a window popped up. The window contained all effects such as stroke, inner glow, and more. I ticked the 'Drop Shadow' box and edited the shadow so it was visible enough to create an effect.
Adding to this, I had to change the background colour to blue. In order to do so, I had to click on the layer that was named 'Background Layer' and go onto the Paint Tool. I changed the size of the paint tool and chose a blue colour from the Colour Swatch; then I painted the whole of the Background Layer.
Furthermore, I had to find an image on the internet and drag it to the program. I found a picture of a comedian and dragged the image onto Photoshop. I then cut out the background leaving the person. I had to change the colour of his hair by highlighting the hair , going onto Image > Adjustments > Colour Balance and changing the hair colour to a light brown.
To add a border around the person, I double clicked the picture layer and ticked the 'Stroke'. I edited the border so it was thick enough that the person was visible from the background. I also changed the colour.

Research and Planning: Skin Tutorial

03:44 Posted by l1v.design

To begin with, I started off with her appearance as she had many spots on her face. In order to remove/hide the spots, I had to go to the 'Spot Healing Tool' in the toolbar and click all of the blemishes she had.
Adding to this, I also had to make her skin less greasy-looking. To do so, I duplicated the layer and clicked on Filter > Blur > Smart Blur. I kept the changes that Photoshop already gave me and clicked ok. The blur affected the entire image, so I rubbed out most of the image leaving the skin part. I then changed the Opacity to 50% so it was still realistic and good quality.
Once the skin was finished, I moved onto the hair. I selected the hair using the 'Quick Selection' tool and went to Image > Adjustments > Black & White. Next, I selected Tint and chose the colour I wish to have. I then rubbed out most of the mask leaving the hair a sepia-brown colour.
Afterwards, I moved on to the eyes. I zoomed into the eyes using the Zoom tool and clicked the Paintbrush tool. I chose a colour using the Colour Swatch in the top left column and changed the opacity of the paintbrush to 30%. I began to paint over the eyes to show Eye shadow. I changed the size of the paintbrush to 1 and made the opacity to 100% in order to make the eyelashes.
To conclude the picture, I changed the colour of the background. In order for me to change the whole background, I shift-selected the walls using the 'Magic Wand' tool and went to Image > Adjustments > Colour Balance and changed the Highlights and Shadows to make a reddish orange colour.

Research And Planning: CD Cover Tutorial

03:42 Posted by l1v.design

To begin with, I opened the CD image and I had to cut the background off so I just had the CD itself. To do so, I clicked the 'Eliptical Marquee tool' in the toolbar and, while holding shift to gain a perfect circle, I held the select tool in the top corner of the image and dragged it to the opposite corner. This allowed me to select just the CD

After I selected the CD, I dragged the image selection to the next document which contained the album background. Once dragged, I had to change the colour. To do so, I clicked on the image layer and go to Image > Adjustments > Colour Balance  and changed the CD to purple. I then placed the CD in the corner and rotated it.

Adding to that, the next step I had to do was to place a transparent trumpet onto the CD cover. Because the image was not transparent, I had to use the 'Magic Wand' tool and clicked on part of the trumpet; then I went to Select > Similar. This tool would allow me to select the trumpet as a whole instead of picking it one-by-one. Once I did that, I went back to the Select tab and went down to Inverse, this would allow me to pick the whole background instead of dragging and dropping the trumpet. Furthermore, I selected the whole of the trumpet and placed it into the CD cover document; I rotated it and moved it to a place where you could not see where the trumpet was cut off. Again, I changed the colour to a more brass colour by going onto Image > Adjustments > Colour Balance.
Thereafter, I had to uncover another image of which was already on the CD cover. I had to place them so they were coming out of the Trumpet as well as change the colour. I changed the colour the same way I changed the colour of the Trumpet; by going on Image > Adjustments > Colour Balance.
Laastly, I had to add my name by clicking the Text Tool and writing at the bottom of the CD cover. I added a border by double clicking on the layer and ticking the box 'Stroke'. Next, I made it more transparent by clicking on the text layer and going to 'opacity'.
