Saturday, 12 October 2013 13:31 Posted by l1v.design
Regarding the Survey I created yesterday, I had at least 28 people filling out the questionnaire. Even though I was suppose to only have 10, I believe having more would give you a more accurate bunch of results.

Competitions - 14 (50%)
Latest K-Pop Songs - 22 (78.57%)
Reviews of Korean Music Videos - 18 (64.29%)

Tickets to a concert - 18 (64.29%)
Meet and Greet - 14 (50%)
Signed Poster - 6 (21.43%)

Purple and White -  1 (3.57%)

Conclusion:

Q2 Review:
I am able to make a K-Pop magazine as 23 people said they would be interested in reading one.

Q3 Review:
The magazine will cost '£2.00' as it is the most popular answer.

Q4 Review:
Due to the fact that BIGBANG were the most popular group in question 4, I will be basing the competition and interviews on them. These will be shown on the Double page spread.

Q5 and Q7 Review:
As for the coverlines and headings, I will be choosing all of them as they were all quite popular. The main coverlines will be based on the most chosen which were 'Latest K-pop songs' and 'Interviews with Korean Idols/Groups'.  I will also place one of the competitions as a cover line because this will add more interest to the magazine.

Q6 Review:
There is a slight trouble when it comes to the Masthead. The audience had picked both 'Coup D'etat' and 'Crooked', therefore I feel I have a choice of which Masthead to chose.

I think I will chose "CROOKED" as it is all one word. The name 'Crooked' has a distorted and a slight crazy feel to it which is what I want the magazine to be based upon..

Q7 Review:
I have decided to chose 3 Competitions for the magazine. This will allow the magazine to be busy and packed with good things. the competitions I will chose will be 'Tickets to a concert', 'Meet and Greet' and 'Win a Signed Album'

Q8 Review:
The colour scheme will be Red, Black and White as it was the most chosen choice.

Regarding the Double Page Spread:
The double paged spread will be based around either a music video/song produced by BIGBANG or some facts on the group from the 'editors' of the magazine. This is because  the group was the most chosen answer on Q4.

Research and Planning: Questionnaire to Audience

10:00 Posted by l1v.design
Most of my class mates have used the classical method of handing out the questionnaires to the other students in the room. However, because my music genre is obscure and rarely liked, I have decided to use Survey Monkey and Tumblr combined to gain my Target Audience's answers.
Firstly, I created 8 questions on Survey Monkey. Survey Monkey is an online site which allows you to create a Questionnaire and share it to the audience. The 8 questions I made were:

1. How old are you?

2. Would you be interested to buy a K-Pop magazine?
Yes,
No,
Maybe

3. How much would you pay for the magazine?
£1.00,
£1.50,
£2.00,
£2.50,
More than £3.00

4. Name a Korean group/idol of which you listen to the most.
5. What would you like to see in the magazine? You may pick more than one
Competitions
Latest K-pop Songs
K-pop Fashion
Interviews with Korean Idols/Groups

6. Which of these Mastheads would you like to see as the magazine name?
Coup D'etat,
Crooked,
Trouble,
Loathe

7. What sorts of Competitions would you like to see? Pick two
Tickets to a Concert,
Meet and Greet,
Signed Poster,
K-pop Accessories,
Win a Signed Album.

8. What Colour scheme would you like to see on the Magazine?
Red, Black and White
Blue, Black and White
Purple and Black
Red and Black
White and Black
Yellow and Black
Purple and White

After creating the Survey and publishing it, I then went onto Tumblr and promoted the website and asked the people to answer the questions. Tumblr is a social-networking site which people can create a blog and post/re-blog thinks that about they like; similar to Blogger. I posted this post and asked my followers to answer the survey:

At the moment, the survey is still being answered. The last time I looked, about 20 people have answered the survey. In order to get an accurate Music Magazine, I wish for as many to answer it as possible. I am waiting for the answers to slow down then I will close the Questionnaire.
I will update soon.

This is how the Survey Monkey editing part looked (click to see at a larger scale):

Research and Planning: Double Page Spread Analysis

Friday, 11 October 2013 03:17 Posted by l1v.design

This is a Double Page spread dedicated to the group, All Amaerican Rejects. I wish to set out my magazine double page like this one as it is very eye-catching as well as shows a number of good images.

To begin with, the Double page spread is based around the genre of Rock/Punk. This shows that impression since the colours are dark yet vibrant and the group are a punk band. The colours have suited well to the large image. As you can see, the singer's jeans and hat on number 2 are the same colour as number 1 as well as the double page layout overall. This relates well to the genre as it presents an eye-catching look to the pages.
Futhermore, the genre of this double page is Rock. The way the models are positioned in the largest image (number 2) are facing right at the camera, this suggests intimidation as well as rebellion that they are positioned as though they are coming towards the camera.

In addition, the impression they show on the Double page spread suggests mainly that the group are being interviewd by the magazine. This suggests that the band are either very popular to have this interview or they are beginning a tour/promoting an album. As you can see on number 4, the columns are layed out as though it is a chatroom as they have put the talker's name in red then have written what they said. Overall, the representation of the Double page spread is dedicated to being different and not being what the media tells you to be. The showing of this is seen in the images on number 5.

Moreover, the audience for the magazine contents page would mainly be teenagers to young adults. Like the Contents Page, the age group would be roughly 18 - 25 year olds.
Judging by the use of colour in the Contents Page, the black, purple and red suggests the group are quite the opposite to Pop or Indie: The colour Red is known to be a confident colour that usually suggests that the person is passionate of what they are doing and do not care for other's opinions, the colour Purple can suggest imagination or being creative, and, lastly, the colour Black can illustrate secretative or hidden signs. Therefore, they are displaying the fact that the group are known to be a creative, passionate group that don't identify their secrets.
As you can see on number 4, the use of Gutters has been used in between the two columns in order to make it more organised. However, the columns have not been justified; they have been aligned to the left in order to make it easier to read. The gutters are not very thick, this is good as it allows the double page to look professional. The border guideline around the double page spread is quite narrow. This creates an idea that the double page is packed with information and images.
At number 3, there is a quote as well as some more writing from the interview. The quote has a slight drop shadow to it in order for it to pop out of the page. The placement of the quote box suggests that it is in the interview and the editor has picked it out. This will allow the reader to find where the quote is by reading the interview.
Also, the placement of images at number 5 have been tilted at an angle and look as though they have been stuck on with tape. The image placement makes the Double page look like a scrap book styled layout. This makes the reader interested in the page.
Above number 1, there is a thin red line and it is behind the double page layout. You can tell this because the red line is placed behind the Band member's head. This can give a good effect to the band members as it shows they are important and it allows them to pop out of the magazine. The red line has the name of the band in front of it. This is a good idea as it allows the reader to find out who the editior is talking about as well as who the band are called.

Research and Planning: Contents Page Analysis

02:54 Posted by l1v.design
In order for me to understand what a Contents Page should look like, I have decided to analyse a popular rock magazine known as 'Kerrang' to look at the aspects of a Contents Page layout.Firstly, I will begin with the Genre. The genre of 'Kerrang' is mainly based around Punk, Metal,  Heavy Metal, and anything based in the Rock style. 'Kerrang' presents this genre mainly on the Cover and the Contents Page. On here, the grid-positioned images are all rock singers which portrays the fact that this magazine is to do with Rock Music. I will be using the idea of the layout of the images (shown on '4') because I believe this will look professional as well as make the magazine look packed and full of exciting articles. In addition, by the look of the Magazine Contents Page, I believe the representation of this magazine are to do with rebellion and being different. The image, which is shown as number 3, shows a singer next to two zombies. This portrays the fact that the musician is not afraid of the zombies, he shows bravery and intimidation in his eyes as he looks into the camera. This large image creates a perfect representation of the idea that Kerrang is not afraid or scared to show it's inner style. The use of this will be used in my Magazine Contents page because I wish my magazine layout to look intimidating yet an obscure street style.
Furthermore, the audience for the magazine contents page would mainly be teenagers to young adults. Specifically, the age group would be roughly 18 - 25 year olds.
Judging by the use of colour  in the Contents Page, the black and yellow shows character as well as rebellion. The reason I thought of this is the colour of the 'Do Not Cross' tape is yellow and black. Also, yellow and black can show up vibrantly as the two colours together can make each one look strong.

Media Language:
As you can see on number 2, there are columns showing the pages and the page numbers. Adding to this, the use of gutters has been used in between the page number and the headlines. This shows a clear organisation and I will be using this in my magazine contents page. Number 1 shows the title of the page along with a quote and a word from the editor  I like the idea of placing the contents page title and the word from the editor in my magazine as it will give the reader an understanding of what the magazine is about.

Research and Planning: Mastheads for Music Magazine

Thursday, 3 October 2013 07:24 Posted by l1v.design
I tried out different ways to present my Masthead on my Music Magazine cover. The Masthead name will be called 'CROOKED'. This is the name of a well-known single by one of l my favourite artists, G-Dragon. 'CROOKED' can mean Obscurity as well as being different from others, so this will possibly present to most readers that the magazine is based on the Revolution of Korean Music.

To begin with, the first Masthead looked very grunge and bold which is what I am aiming for in my magazine. It shows a good effect as I have added two borders to the text. The two borders create a shadow and creates the illusion that the black text is coming out to the reader.
However, I believe the font is too much as the magazine will look slightly more smart and organised than this. Also, I think that the Masthead is too messy for the Magazine style.

The second one I made has a creative look to it. This Masthead looks as though it is from a Fashion magazine. Even though I am creating a Music Magazine, I feel as though this one is the best so far as it shows a neat, architectural feel to it.
On the other hand, I think that this Masthead is too neat and looks like the sort of Masthead you would get in a highly mature and professional magazine such as a House Designing magazine. To me, it does not have the characteristics of a Grunge music magazine.

The third magazine is similar to the first one. The masthead has a red outline to the text in order to make the font pop out. Also, the background is a pale brown along with a thick, red outline. This allows the masthead to not blend into the background of the cover image.
In my opinion, I would not use this masthead for my final piece for many reasons. Firstly, the bordered background does not give a professional look to the magazine as I feel as though the Masthead should not have a background to it. Having a background to the masthead will ruin the 3 colour rule and it would be difficult to obtain that goal of keeping the 3 colours.

In conclusion, I do not believe the first or third masthead look professional enough for my music magazine. However, I do not believe the second masthead would be suitable as it looks too upper class for the grunge-style magazine.
I would like to combine two of the mastheads, this will be the first and second mastheads. I will use the red colours from the first masthead and place them onto the arch of the second one. I will keep the second masthead's font as I feel this shows that the magazine is quite a grunge/elegant music magazine. Most grunge Korean idols use the idea of elegance and the grunge look combined to make it eye-catching for the reader.

I have made a few more Mastheads in order to figure out my final design:

I only made these in order to explore more ways into using Photoshop and Dafont combined.
Conclusion: I feel as though I will be using this as my Final Masthead Design:
The text shows erosion and has an urban feel to it. This is what I wished for when looking at different fonts. The Colour goes well with the overall magazine colour scheme as it contains Dark red with a Black border and shadow. This created a bold look along with an distorted style.

Research and Planning: Designing so far

02:21 Posted by l1v.design
On this page, I was working out where to place the 'Revolution' text on the Masthead. I chose the first one as it looks creative and it suggests that 'Coup D'etat' means Revolution.
This is one of the many draft designs I am drawing on paper. I still have not fully figured out the design of the Cover but I have looked at a range of ideas for it.
I believe I would like to have the model dressing smartly for this, it presents elagance and also shows the fashion side of Korean Music.

This is another design I have created. This is more of a Medium Close-up and I don't think I will use this design for the Cover. The reason for this is the model is too close to the camera; also, the Masthead is too small. I would probably move the camera further away to create a Medium shot and not a Medium Close-up.

Research and Planning: Magazine Collage

Tuesday, 1 October 2013 05:32 Posted by l1v.design

Due to the fact I created this A3 collage and added more around it, I was not able to scan this in. Therefore, I had to take a picture of the collage so the quality of the image will not be very clear.
For temporary uses, I will put the images up to prove that I have made the Magazine Collage.

I will be gaining inspiration from this collage when it comes to the Masthead, the Cover and the many camera shots.

For the Masthead, I was thinking of using the words 'Coup D'etat'. This means 'Revolution' in French and is the name of a famous song in Korea. However, I will only be using this as a temporary Masthead as I will find out from my Target Audience what the Masthead should be.

Most of the Camera Shots on these Magazine covers are mainly Medium to Medium Long shots. This is in order to show the model's facial expression along with what style of clothing they are wearing. Also, having this Camera shot will allow the coverline's to be seen much bolder as most of the background will be visible.
